NOTES AND COMMENTS

Strong H.B. Team for Wanganui

(By “The Barb.”)

A few of the Hawke’s Bay horses claiming engagement at Wanganui have already departed. Representatives from here total just on a score, whilst Mr F. Ormond’s Flammarian and Mr A. Symes’s Flaxen also represent this district, although not trained here. The following are making the trip:— Royal Feast, Marsong and The Khedive (Maiden, 5 furlongs); Emotion, Ruanui, Kinross and Anemometer (Hack Hurdles, 1| mile) ; Hest, Sir Nigel and Hukemanu (Putiki Hack, 8| furlongs); Limbohin (Marangai Handicap, 1J mile); Passion Fruit (Seatield Handicap, 7.1 furlongs); Hunting Jay, Cyclonic. Hest, Blue Boy and Hybiscus (Durie Hack. 6 furlongs). The two-year-old, Shu, by Hunting Song from Hathor, will contest the Juvenile Handicap the second day.

Radiant Star, the three-year-old that won at Epsom, Melbourne, on Saturday, is by Hunting Song from Spotlight, by Nassau—Stardancer, by Martian — Stepdancer, by Stepniak —Pibroch. by Lochiel —Fallacy, by Sledmere.

Panegyric, the two-year-old filly by Honour from Eulalie that was mentioned last week in the “Tribune ’ as a youngster that was attracting attention at Riccarton, has gone slightly wrong and has had to be eased up.

Air A. D. Potter, who has been conlined to hospital, is now fully recovered and is a daily visitor to the Ellerslie track in charge of his three horses. Mr Potter intends paying another visit to Hastings in the near future.

A two-year-old trained at Wanganui that is considered to be high class is a bay colt by Posterity from Episode, thus a hull-brother to Epigram, who won at Melbourne on Saturday last. This two-year-old will race as Entail, and is to contest the Juvenile event at \\ angauui on Saturday.

R. Alexander has a three-year-old lilly, by name Okanaga, by Gascony from Aureate that shows ability. She may make her bow to the public in the Maiden at Napier Park at the end of this month.

The Rossendale brood mare Polonaise, one of the matron- at the Mana Stud, was mentioned to writer the other day as being something of rn exception as she has thrown six foals to bate, and all colts. Certainly such is an uncommon occurrence, but the writer has known many more exceptional cases, and without looking through the stud books quotes Polymnia (imp.), the dam of The Cypher, etc., as one. This mare had eight foals (seven living and one dead) and all were not only colts but bay in colour as well.

The first reported thoroughbred foal m this district this season is a filly by Seigfried (imp.) from Dissertation, by Demosthenes from Suratura, by Saracen. This particular family that Mr Percy F. Wall has bred from has been exceptionally successful, despite the fact that it is a short pedigree one.

The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, which was refused permission to race on Easter Saturday, has now received word from the Racing Conference that May .1 and 6 have been approved.

The Mercian King—Cetus four-year-old will race as The Grasper. He is a line big raw-boned gelding with plenty of “fight,” and in him Mr G. D. Beatson has the makings of a jumper, as ho is the right cut of a young horse to develop that way.

The H.8.J.0. are staging a “parade” on the Hastings racecourse on September 22 next for two-year-olds and other untried young racers. Owners from Waipawa, Waipukurau, Greenmeadows and Hastings have signified their intention of sending representatives. The public are cordially invited to attend, and no charge or collection is to be made.

The parade will prove a boon to owners of two-year-olds, as a tlneefurlong gallop together with the colours up will prove just as beneficial as a race The club’s action is to be commended, and the entertainment should prove most interesting to the sporting public. « * *

Entries for the parade will not close until the middle of next week after which “cards” will be distributed free of charge to all. *

Whetuma (7.5) is an additional acceptor in the Djirie Hack Handicap at Wanganui.
