A.J.C. DERBY

A Favourite Discussed

Discussing the prospects of Silver King, one of the ruling favourites for’ the A.J.C. Derby after his easy win in the Hohartville Stakes at Warwick Farm, a Sydney writer says:— Were the three-year-old supremacy to be decided over seven furlongs there would bo 110 doubt about Silver King, who won the Hobartville Stakes by two lengths. Silver King lias shown himself a horse in any going, and on Saturday, after taking charge at the end of a furlong, he gave nothing a chance. Form may be upset because of the going, which was heavy, and, as a guide to future prospects, the race was a failure, for the simple reason that Silver King, CYistodian (N.Z.) who was second, and Duke Caledon, who was third, were so superior that the field was being pulled up in the last furlong. Silver King is brilliant, and must be considered for the Derby, although his brilliance may be his undoing. One remembers too easily the fate of Molhson, to whom, in galloping, style, and to a certain degree conlormation, Silver King bears a striking resemblance. On the other hand, however, Silver King is bred on particularly stout lines. He is by El Cacique, who was bred in the Argentine in 1922, and was imported to Australia in 1929 by Mr R. C. Allen. El Cacique is by Tracery, a recognised stayer himself, and an acknowledged progenitor of staying lines. Indiecita, dam of El Cacique, was by Vai D’or from Indecise, by St. Mirin. El Cacique was at the stud in France, and left many smart gallopers in that country. Silver King’s dam is Silver Wedding, a daughter of the imported inaro Wedding ih-esent. who was by Trenton. Il was indeed a fortunate decision when Mr Allen purchased the mare Penny Wedding in England, for the foal at foot, which was later named Wedding Present, has founded a line of really good gallopers, practically all of which have been raced by the breeder. Among them are Wedding Day, who won the Villiers Stakes, Challenge Stakes, Doncaster Handicap, and Tattersall’s Cup, and Wedding Eve, a good middle-dis-tance galloper whose victories included several first-class events at Randwick. Silver Wedding is by imported Antonio, who was also brought to Australia by Mr Alien. Wedding Present is from Penny Wedding, by Bost Man from Mistress Penn, by Hampton, and a descendant of the famous Bruce Lowe No. 1 family, that has produced Heroic, Magpie (imp.), Manfred, and a host of classic winners all over the world.
