In a liftcen-round bout for the Empire heavy-weight championship at White City, Petersen (holder) defeated Gains, who retired in the thirteenth round. There was a record attendance of 64,000. Petersen forced the pace, although Gains was cleverer in ringcraft, enabling him to avoid much heavy punishment. Peterson landed terrific blows in the thirteenth round, and Gains reeled at the gong. He staggered to his corner and the towel was thrown in.
