Mr. and Mrs. Heath Johnson", of Gisborne, flew down from Gisborne tt Napier yesterday in a Hawke’s Bay Aero Club machine piloted by FlightLieut. A. G. Gerrand, and are spending a week at the Centra) Hotel. Owing to head’ winds and bad visibility, the flight took some forty minutes over the usual hour.
Archdeacon F. W. Chatterton, view of St. Luke's, Rotorua, has intimated to the Bishop of Waiaptl, hie intention to retire from his ministry at the end of the present year. The arehdeaeon has been at Rotorua for nearly 16 years. He had previously spent 17 years in the training of Maori clergy at Te Ran College, Gisborne, following Ifl years’ service in the Nelson diocese.

Mr. G. C. Billing, lecturer in economics, Otago University, has been grant-* ed the degree of .Ph.D. Mr. Billing went to England in 1932 with a Rockefeller fellowship, and- has been studying at the London School of Economica. His treatise for his degree was on “The Relation of Protection to the Industrial Development of New Zealand. ” Mr. and Mrs. Billing and theit young child will leave London in Oetober. They will spend two months at Adelaide before going on to Dunedin. Recentlv they enjoyed a trip to Denmark, Sweden and Norway.
