MAGISTRATE’S COURT
Cases Heard in Napier To-day The following miscellaneous cases were dealt with by Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., in the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning:— Charged under the Railways Amendment Act that he failed to stop at a compulsory crossing stop to make observations to ascertain whether or not the line was clear, James Kyle was convicted and fined 10/-, costs 10/-. Senior-Sergeant W. Pender said that on account of defendant’s failure to stop to make observation a tram collided with defendant's lorry, causing considerable damage. Defendant fortunately escaped without serious injury. A young man whose name was Ordered to be suppressed was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence it called upon within six months on a charge tuat he stole a sijver serviette vase valued at £2. The senior-sergeant explained that on September 1 the defendant in company with other young men went into the Majestic tearooms. They had boon celebrating Hawke s Bay s winning the Ranfurly Shield, and had taken more drink than was good for them. Having liquor m their possession they wanted something to drink it from, and defendant took the vase, lie again visited the tearooms ou Saturday last and was identiiieU. Later he was interviewed by the police, and he brought the vase back last Sunday. For the defendant Mr A. H. D. Mayno submitted that there was no guilty intention. J. Grant, charged with driving a car without being tho holder of a license, was fined ill, costs 12/-. G. Harrison, on a charge that he drove a motor-lorry which Had not an efficient silencing device, was fined £1 10/-, costs 10/-. Thomas Charles Bew, for crossing an intersection at a dangerous speed, was fined £1 10/-, costs 10/-. C. C. Dennett was fined £2, costs 10/-, for exceeding the maximum speed under the heavy motor vehicle regulations. L. Coker, similarly charged, was also fined £2, oosts 10/-. For riding bicycles at night on county roads without lights, K. Mudgway and A. Croon were each fined 10/-, costs 10/-.
