TRAFFIC TALLIES
Big Volume via Hastings MAIN HIGHWAY LITTLE USED Despite the condition of portion of Railway roAcf, which is to be permanently sealed during tho coming summer, the recent vehicular traffic tallies taken on the various highways by the Hawke's Bay County Council for the Main Highways Board show that the greater portion of the through traffic from the north to south of Pakipaki passes through Hastings, instead of travelling over the highway via Farndon, Pakowhai bridge and Stortford Lodge. At yesterday’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council, the engineer, Mr R. Fuflett, submitted a report, set out below, ot the details of the tallies taken. As tlie names of some of the highways are somewhat misleading, elucidation on some of the figures is necessary. The greatest volume of traffic was recorded at the Mangateretero corner on tho Farndon-Hastings road, where there was an average ot 1,322 vehicles per day. At the Farndon Park juncture 1,270 vehicles passed daily, of which 1,175 proceeded towards Hastings, the other 101 travelling down the highway towards the Pakowhai bridge. ilt Pakipaki, at the junction of the highway and Railway road. 519 vehicles were recorded, of which 447 travelled over Railway road, leaving only 62 daily as having traversed the highways towards Stortiord Lodge. The Napier-Tuki Tuki highway is vaguely described under this terln. It embraces the whole route from Napier via Taradale, Omahu, Hastings and Havelock North,. The tally taken at the Rugby League ground is on the Taradale road near the Westshore embankment. A further tally on this highway was taken opposite the Memorial Hospital on the Omahu road, where 716 vehicles passed daily. A further tally was taken at the junction with St. George’s road, which showed that a daily average of 1,021 vehicles travelled over the Havelock road. At the Waimargma bridge, which is the junction for tho three highways— Napier-Tuki Tuki, Tuki Tuki-Wai-maraina, and Tuki Tuki-Elsthorpe—a tally was taken which disclosed an average of 86 travelling between the bridge and towards Te Mata. 60 between the bridge and towards Waimarania, and only 22 between the bridge and towards Elsthorpe.
