THE BEST SEEDS
Good Departmental Work
During recent years the Department of Agriculture has been very prominent in -testing out the various strains of ryegrass, cocksfoot, and white clover produced in New Zealand, also in other countries. Exhaustive tests have shown that, in this country, we have the best types of cocksfoot, white elover, and ryegrass in the world. The results of .these tests have been freely published through the press and the Journal of Agriculture. The object of such publicity has been to educate farmers to sow only the best types in order to secure permanent pastures and plants which produce the greatest bulk of feed; It has been definitely proved that imported cocksfoot and white clover are only annuals Importations of these seeds, however, are still noticeable, as the Govern ment’a official figures from January to July show that 23 tons of white clover and 63 tons of cocksfoot have been imported into New Zealand. The Government’s regulations provide for a special straining of imported seeds which makes them easily distinguishable by farmers. In view of the poor strains ot imported cocksfoot, and white clover it is to bo wondered how a market can bo found for the imported quantities which are still finding their way into New- Zealand.
