Another effort to pass the Gaming Amendment Bill, but this time in a modified form, will be made during the present session of Parliament. It is expected that within the next day or so a bill providing for the double totalisator mid publication of (dividends, hut omitting the provision I contained in last year's bill for the I telegraphing of lifts to racceourse«, i will be introduced into the Legislative I Council by a private member. When the Gaming Amendment Bill was before the House last session there was considerable opposition to the proposal to permit of the telegraphing of bets to courses, and an effort was lining made to prevent a vote being reached on the second reading when the Prime Minister, 'the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forb#,, adopted the unusual course of movtßg for urgency for the private member,’ bill, and his motion was defeated, the bill being subsequently withdraw® from the order paper on the motion of the sponsor, Mr. Healy. It is stated thrre is an excellent , prospect of the modified bill passing the Legislative Council, in which caoe the supporters of the measure in th« House anticipate Ih'.'i.t the Lower Ilo'ioe will give the bill its approval. The main opposition to the bill loot session camo from the Labour Partw, but it is stated that several members of the party would have no objection Io the measure if the provision for the telegraphing of bets is deleted.
