In the Magistrate’s Court, Trevor Lyall Evans, aged 18, pleaded guilty •nd was committed for sentence on a charge of assaulting Walter George Hill, manager of the Self Help Store at Beckenham, on the night of August 8. In a statement made to a detective, the accused said he had been jealous of Hill for some time because Hill used to take hi* girl from him in “Excuse Me’’ dances. He thought Hill did that <o make him look boyish. He had had this idea in his mind for some time, and on August 8 he decided to go to Hill’s shop and give him a thrashing. He called Hill to the door and directed a blow at him with a stick. Hill called for help and a struggle ensued. When he heard people coming ho struck Hill three times with a kerosene bottle. He wanted to knock Hill out so that he eould get away. Hill went limp and the accused thereupon ran • way. The police stated that the assault had been deliberately planned, and the accused was very fortunate to be in Court only on a minor charge. Counsel denied that the accused had been masked, and said he was simply wearing a scarf, which he had been ■ wearing earlier in the day.
