TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

GARDEN CIRCLE MEETS. There was a good attendance of members of the garden circle of the Hastings Townswomen’s Guild at St. Andrew’s Schoolroom, Hastings, yesterday afternoon to talk about seeds, bulbs and blooms. Mrs Glenny acted as chairwoman and Mrs 11. Davies as secretary. Mrs Glenny introduced the speakers, Mrs H. Harvey and Miss Shaw, both of whom displayed a clear knowledge of their respective subjects. Airs Harvey read a most interesting paper on tho culture of pansies and violas, giving minute directions for securing the best results in colour, size and symmetry, and the points which should bo considered for show purposes. Airs Harvey also explained a very good way of growing crocus and hyacinths without soil. Examples she had on view were planted in fibre and growing in bowls. Some fine spikes wore shown of deep cherry red, and also blue, yellow and white crocus in fibre. Miss Shaw chose, the growing of tomatoes from seeds, going on then to the care necessary of planting out, and then finally into the garden. Interest was proved by the number of intelligent questions asked and answered. Later the members were asked to state which was their favourite flower, and why. This led to quite a useful talk and gave members an opportunity of expressing themselves, for which Mrs Glenny thanked them. Tea was handed round by Mrs de Denno and Mrs Fendall. Airs Davies thanked those who had helped with such a happy afternoon, and Mrs Glenny announced that the Napier friends would provide the programme for the next garden circle meeting.
