RUGBY FOOTBALL

CLUB COMPETITION Technical 0.8. Now Leaders CELTIC DOWNED BY NAPIER 0.8 Attendances were in keeping With the performances of the players in the club competition games at Hastings and Napier on Saturday, when play generally was of poor standard. There was only one unexpected upset, that being the defeat of Celtic at the hands of Napier Old Boys. Three matches were played nt Hast ings, none being particularly interesting to watch. In the early afternoon Hastings defeated Havelock North by a margin that did not do justice to the Villagers. The main attraction was the meeting of Napier Old Boys and Celtic, and contrary to anticipations Celtic lost by two points. Tn the other match M.A.C. defeated the second Maori team, Tamatea, by five points in a very fair game. At Napier the competition leaders, Technical Old Boys, had no difficulty in accounting for Eskview, the suburbanites going down by 16 points. In the other senior fixture, Hastings Old Boys, despite the absence of two “stars,” gave a good display against Pirates to win by a margin of eight points. Junior and other grade games were played in various parts of the district, the standard of play not being quite up to the usual in the junior division.
