BALLOON FLIGHT

DRIFT ACROSS EUROPE Cosyns 16,000 Metres Up PLEASED WITH THE RESULTS (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 20, 10.15 a.m.) PARIS, Aug. 19. A message from Ljubljana (Yugo-Slavia) says that Professor Max Cosyns, who accompanied Professor Piccard on his record ascent, made a perfect landing in his stratosphere balloon after a drift across Europe which started from the Belgian Ardennes on Friday night. Peasants, who nt first were terrified by the balloon, assisted with the landing. Professor ‘Cosyns, who was accompanied by M. Vnnderelst, says that he reached an altitude of 16,000 metres.

He had no notion of flying to Yugoslavia. He thought he was over Czedio-Slovakia. He was very pleased with the results of the flight. He investigated certain movements of the cosmic rays and reached important scientific conclusions. He was most alarmed yesterday when his radio broke down when lie tried to send out S.O.S. signals fearing he would drift to disaster. The balloonists' dismantled the balloon 'this morning for return by rail to Belgium. The instruments are in perfect order.
