PENALTY OF CRIME

Supreme Court Sentences ;By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. The following prisoners were sentenced by the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, to-day: George Edward Owen Cross, lor obtaining money by false pretence, twelve months’ hard labour; Leo .Spencer Davies, for forge rj and uttering, two years’ probation and ordered to take out a prohibition order against himself; Leo Oswals Buttle, for breaking and entering and theft, was ordered to come up for sentence within twelve months if called upon; Harold Charles Martin, for breaking and entering and theft, two years’ hard labour, to be served concurrently with the sentence he is at present undergoing. Theodore Astor Payne, flor recklessly driving a motor-car thereby causing death, wag given two years’ reformative detention. His Honour said that in the public interest the prisoner must be punished, and the punishment must not be nominal by any means. His Honour said that the casualty happened on a wide road in broad daylight without any suggestion of traffic or anything that could create a difficulty to properly managing a vehicle; nevertheless, prisoner had run down a youth. Thomas Warren Forrester and Vernon Arnold Watson, for theft from a dwelling house, were remanded for a week with instructions to the probation officer to see if they could not be put to work in a relief camp or somewhere else. His Honour said ho did not feel it was a case where he should send these young men to gaol if it could possibly be avoided.
