M.A.C. BEAT TAMATEA
FOURTEEN POINTS TO NINE. In an interesting but not very snappygame, M.A.C. beat Tamatea at Hastings on Saturday by four tries, only one of which was converted, to two unconverted tries and a penalty goal, the final scores being 14 points to nine. There was little of the bright play that is usually a feature of games between tho two Maori teams, and too much wild passing ami lack of combination. M.A.C. had distinctly the better of the first spell, which ended with the score 14 points to six in their favour, but Tamatea had a slight advantage in the second half. Both teams of forwards played a bard and hustling game, but did not receive the necessary support from their bucks to brighten up the play. From the kick-off, Tamatea set up a lively pace, and came close to a try when Harvey made a dash for the line. The Reds were driven back, however, ami for a long time M.A.C. held the upper hand, success coming wheu Te Ngaio struggled across from a scramble near the line, and scored a try which Greening converted.—M.A.C. 5, Tamatea 3. Once again Harvey came near to .-<• but was tackled before suppm
could reach him. Tamatea were tho next to score, however, when they were given a penalty, and Alataira put over a good kick.—Tamatea 3, M.A.C. 5. A period of even play followed, M.A.C. gradually gaining the ascendancy and scoring by means of a try by Greening, who came in strongly at the end of a forward movement. The scorer took the kick, but failed to convert.
Within the next two or three minutes Purcell scored a fine try from a solo movement, but it was unconverted.— M.A.C. 11, Tamatea 3. Cooper narrowly failed to score for Tamatea in the next minute, but from the ensuing movement Mataira took a penalty kick and goaled. Tamatea 6, M.A.C. 11. Another unconverted try by Greening from a strong forward rush brought the half-time score to 14 to 6in M.A.C.’s favour. Playing a brighter and more enterprising game in the second spell, Tamatea set up a series of solid forward attacks, and with a little luck would have had a couple of tries to their credit. Their only score, however, came from a bright piece of work when Keefe got possession from a line-out and cut clean through the opposition for a neat try which Harvey failed to convert. The remainder of the game was rather in M.A.C. ’s favour than otherwise, but their attempts to score were unsuccessful. The final score was
