WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WAIPUKURAU MEETING. On Friday evening in the Masonic Hall, Waipukurau, Miss Spencer, Dominion secretary of the Women's Institute, gave a lantern lecture under the auspices of the Waipukurau Women’s Institute on her travels abroad. The president, Mrs E. J. Turner, presided over a large attendance. Alter extending a warm welcome to Miss Spencer she presented her with a delightful posy ot fragrant spring Howers.

Miss Spencer, who was wearing the Copenhagen national costume, on rising to speak, was greeted with loud applause. At the outset, Miss Spencer said how privileged she was to have had such an interesting and delightful sojourn in other lauds. She described the wonderful meeting in the Albert Hall, London, where there were thousands of delegates present from all over the country at the National Federation meeting of the Women s Institute. From London she then went to Stockholm to attend the International Federation Conference, where representatives from other nations were present. Miss Spencer’s interesting talk was illustrated by lantern slides scenes from Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, showing national costumes, industries, dwellings, dancing, and views of notable buildings and wayside scenes of country life and pastures.

hi thanking the speaker, .Mrs Turner expressed the views of the audience when she said how much everyone had enjoyed the lecture. Mrs Bibby, of Waipawa, thanked the Waipukurau Institute members for the invitation to be present at such an interesting lecture. Paying great tribute to Miss Spencer, she stated that the Institute members throughout New Zealand were proud to think Miss Spencer had represented them at the Stockholm conference. At the conclusion Mrs Turner, on behalf of the Waipukurau Women s Institute, presented Miss Spencer with the community quilt which had been made by the members. A much appreciated supper was then served.

MEETING AT PUKEHOU

The Pukehou Women’s Institute held their monthly meeting on Thursday. After singing the Institute song and repeating the aspiration, the president (Mrs Campbell) welcomed the visitors. The delegate’s report of the recent Dominion conference was listened to with interest

Mrs T. J. Warren gave a most instructive talk and demonstration on first-aid. A hearty vote of thanks to •Mrs Warren was carried unanimously. The Institute spring flower show is to take place on September 13. Notice of the forthcoming half-yearly meeting of the Federation of Women s Institutes to be held on October 10 was received from the Federation.

The competitions fur that meeting will be the best frock not costing more than 7/6 and a- community banner. A delicious afternoon tea was served by* the hostesses, Mesdanies Cullen, Neave and Ryder. After tea Mrs Turley acted as judge for the cake competition. A large entry was forthcoming and the judge had difficulty in deciding, the awards being Mrs Donald first and Mrs C. Bainbridge second. The second competition was won by Mrs Turley with a very effective bouquet made entirely ol vegetables. The singing of the National Anthern brought another happy afternoon io a close.
