HASTINGS CHAMPIONSHIP T. Garrod The Winner LONGLANDS TO R. BRIDGE The Hastings Golf Club’s annual championship and handicap tournament was concluded on the Bridge Pa links on Saturday afternoon when T. Garrod won the championship, defeating ,T. 11. Hobbs 2up in the final. The Longlands handicap was won by R. Bridge and the Consolation Handicap by N. Appleby. Results: — CHAMPIONSHIP. Final. T. Garrod defeatec J. R. Hobbs,, 2 up LONGLANDS HANDICAP. Final. R- Bridge defeated J. Jarvis 2 and 1. CONSOLATION HANDICAP. Final. N. Appleby defeated 8. Averill, 1 up at the 21st FOUR-BALL HANDICAP. The best cards in the four-bull handicap played in the afternoon wore as follow:— K. O’Donoghue and P. Peacock, 6 up. W. A. Wilson and E. E. Hixon, 5 up. J. Vesty and C. Carrell, 5 up. H. G. Harvey and 8. Powdrell, 4 up. C. 11. Frater and J. B. Fletcher, 4 up. F. 8. Candy and W. J. White, 4 up. I. Mclntosh ami A. W. Harper, 3 up. J. McDonald and W. A. Ross, 3 up. J. L. Paterson and R. St. Laurence, 2 up. DESCRIPTION OF THE PLAY. Both the finalists in the championship got good drives away into the wind at the first hole. Hobbs's second was well short while Garrod was under the bank and about 81t. from the pin with his third, but failed to hole the putt, and the holo was halved in 5. Hobbs again duffed his second at the next hole and sliced his mashie to the light. Garrod was just short of tho bunkers for two, placed his third handy to the hole to win it in 5. Both players were nicely on the green at the next hole with their seconds, and tho holo was halved in par figures. At tho fourth Garrod was in the bunker m front of the green while Hobbs was in the sand just in front of the tee and in the bunker with his next. Garrod chipped out nicely and was 2 up when Hobbs failed to hole his fourth.

Garrod was nicely on the green at the next holo where Hobbs pulled his iron short but played a nice approach to within 12ft. of the pin. He failed to hole his putt and Garrod was down in two putts to be three up. Both players got good drives at “Flaxmere” but Hobbs was up close to the fence, which blocked his way to the green. Both were on with their thirds and the hole was halved in s’s after Garrod failed to hole a 6ft. putt. Hobbs got a beautiful drive at the seventh and was pin high with his second wood and 12ft. from the pin with his approach. Garrod was on in three and ran down a 20ft. putt to win the holo with a birdie four and become 4 up. At “Hades” (Jarrod's drive was sliced and he had to play a short shot away from tho bushes. Hobbj was just short of the green with his second and on in three Garrod played a beautiful iron to the edge of the green, but took three putts, for Hobbs to win in par. Neither player was on at tho ninth but both played good approaches to halve in three. Garrod 3 up. Garrod was out in 38 to Hobbs's 42. Both players sliced their drives at the tenth and Hobbs duffed his second but played a nice mashie to within .-’ft. of tho hole. Garrod was just short witu his second and 6ft. from the pin with his approach putt, and both holed their putts to halve in 4. Both got good drives at ‘ College” and Garrod was nicely on with his second while Hobbs was short, but approached handy to the hole and a half in 4 resulted. At “Punch Bowl” Hobbs drove a long ball to the bottom of the bank to Tho right. His second was nicely on while Garrod was short. Garrod's third hit Hobbs's ball and when he failed to hole his putt Hobbs won in 4 to 5 and Garrod was 3 up. Neither player was on at the 14th and u half in 4 resulted. Hobbs again sliced his drive to the rough and was about 40 yards past the pin with his second while Garrod's second was to the right of the green and his third well past the pin. His approach putt was short and Hobbs halved a sft. putt to reduce Garrod’s lead to 2 up. Hobbs once more sliced his drive to the rough, but was nicely on in two. Garrod's drive was in the ditch, but his second was short of the green anil his approach finished 12ft. from the pm. He missed his putt but stymied Hobbs, who hit his opponent's ball just to find the hole. Garrod 1 up. Hobbs played a nice shot at the loth about 20ft. from the pm. Garrod was short and his approach went past tho hole. Hobbs was nearly down m two but Garrod missed his putt and the match was all square. Both players drove excellent balls at tho 17th. Hobbs being 20 "aids ahead. Garrod was nicely on in two but Hobbs's mashie went through and his approach was short. Garrod wag down m two putts to bo doCmy I. Garrod sliced his drive at the 18th and was short yith his iron. Hobbs again drove an excellent bull of nearly 300 yards but his second went well through the green among the ears His approach was 12ft, from the pin. In spite o' the rigorous winter the greens had improved considerably ami he was sure they had all enjoyed the conditions. Continuing. Mr Pharazyn said how pleased tho club was to see so many visitors present and ho made special reference to Mr 8. Powdrell, of Wanganui, who had been to every tournament held by the club. He hoped they would all come back next year and bring some of their friends with them. He also cw pressed appreciation of the manner in which the tournament had been mnmigc’d and congratu-

lated the secretary (Mr E- A. Murley) on the excellence of the arrangements. Mr Pharazyn, after making appreciative reference to the manner in which Mrs Ferguson had attended to the catering, and the assistance rendered byMr 11. A. Fannin as starter, called for three cheers for the visitors, which were heartily given. .
