WOMAN SERIOUSLY HURT
Car Upside Down in Ditch PASSENGERS IMPRISONED (By Telegraph—Press Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 18. As a result of a car smash in Hills road, Marshlands, last evening, Miss Diana Orbell of Pentlow, Timaru, was admitted to hospital with serious head injuries and in an unconscious condition. Miss Orbell was in a coupe car driven by Mr. K. H. Hargreaves which ran off the road at an unlighted corner and came to rest on its roof in a sixfoot ditch. Miss Orbell struck her head on the roof of the car and Mr. Hargreaves was rendered semiconscious. The doors of the car jammed, and it was impossible for the occupants to escape. A passer-by called PoliceConstable Osborne, who, wading up to his knees in the mud of the ditch, used a crowbar and a sledge hammer to smash open oue door and drag the injured persons out. Undoubtedly the steel roof saved the lives of the occupants. Miss Orbell’s condition this morning has improved. ,
