EMPIRE GAMES

CRUMP SECOND IN HEAT Ryan Wins 1500 Free-Style LOVELOCK IN MILE FINAL (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 7, 12.45 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 6. A holiday crowd of 30,000 witnessed the second day of the Empire Games. The weather was overcast. Edwards, a negro, veteran Olympiad competitor, who ran fifth at the Empire Games in Canada,, at last gained an Empire title with a magnificent performance. I Ryan brilliantly turned tho tables on Pirie, swimming 20 seconds faster than in his heat. The Australian staved off Ririe’s determined challenge at the end without unduly hurrying his beautiful long stroke.

Noel Crump’s failure to steer a true course up the lane cost him first place in the third heat of the 100 yards. Even then the finish was so close that it seemed a dead-heat, but Larsen was given the verdict by two-fifths of a second. In the women’s 200 yards breaststroke, although Miss Dennis outclassed the field without being extended, she reduced Miss Eastern's English record by one and three-fifths seconds. J. E. Lovelock is among those who qualified for the mile final to-morrow. Others are Comes, Reeve and Wooder. son, all English, and Wade, Canada. Lovelock ran third in his heat, being content to qualify in slow time. Results of tho various events are as under: — ATHLETIC EVENTS 220 YARDS. Yates (Australia) won his heat in 22 2-ssecs.
