Officer to Study in England (By Telegraph - Press Association.) WELLINGON, Aug. 2. An announcement that Mr. W- A. Joiner, M.Se., chief fuel analyst of the Dominion laboratory of the Department of Scientific ami Industrial Research, has been sent to England to study the latest developments in coal utilisation, was made by the Prime Minister, lit. Hon. G. W. Forbes, yesterday. Mr. Joiner will work at the fuel research station and will also visit Imperial Chemical Industries’ works at Billinghain-on-Tees, where hydrogenation of coal for production of petrol is due to begin on a commercial scale in January. Mr. Joiner was for many years employed by the Fuel Research Association, and is author of several bulletins giving results of experiments on the chemical composition of New Zealand coals and their behaviour under low temperature carbonisation. Mr. Forhes said that Mr. Joiner was being sent Home to gain experience of modern developments, as the Government desired to have available wellfounded advice on new methods of coal utilisation, in view of their possible application under New Zealand conditions at the appropriate stage of development.
