MATCHES FOR RANFURLY SHIELD FIXTURES COMPLICATIONS. For various reasons, but largely because of the All Black-The Rest trial match on or about September 1 and Inter-provincial fixtures between now and the middle of September, the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union has definitely accepted only one challenge, from Auckland, on September 8, for the Ranfurly Shield.—A Challenge from Wanganui drew the reply that August 16 was the only date available, and a challenge from Taranaki had to bo deferred in the meantime. The management. committee of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union spent nearly two hours last night trying to devise a table of Ranfurly Shield matches that would not clash with outside fixtures. The situation was complicated with tlie touring dates already arranged by the Wanganui team, a League fixture at McLean Park on August 23, and the return of the All Blacks and their probable playing against The Rest on or about September 1. Eventually, the committee decided definitely to play Auckland on September 8 for the shield and to acquaint the Taranaki union with the facts lead tug up to the deferring of its challenge for the time being. If Wanganui can play Hawke’s Bay on August 16, which is a Thursday, then that fixture also will have the shield at stake. H.B. UNION MEETS. CHAMPIONSHIP - FIXTURES. . Mr J. W. He was magnificent on attack and sterling in defence. Devine was the best forward on the ground. Bradley (wing) played a splendid game. Very early tn the game Finlay kicked two penalties for Manawatu. Wairarapa, ably led by Fluety, recovered, but Manawatu quickly attacked, Eade scoring from a forward sortie' and Himona scored a good try for Wairarapa. Again Eade scored for Manawatu, Finlay converting. Waldin opened up and passed to Devine, who scoredWairarapa attacked and Stringfellow wag caught close to the line. .Manawatu quickly cleared and sent Bradley away, who passed in to Dewe, who scored. The first spell ended: Manawatu 20, Wairarapa 3. In the second spell Wairarapa attacked fiercely and smashed into the defence repeatedly. Hemi goaled from a penalty. Finlay made an opening and sent to Devine, to Bradley, who threw off Stringfellow to score a great tryin the corner. Again Hemi goaled from a penalty with a splendid kick making the scores Manawatu 23, Wairarapa 12. Moffat scored in the corner, raising the score to 26. Wairarapa, showing plenty of life, sent away the winger, Fitzgerald, who knocked-on on the line. Booth scored twice in a short interval with back line movements. The game ended 26 —20 in favour of Manawatu.
