Various Fines Follow Visit by Police A visit by the police to a hotel i« Hastings last Saturday accounted for J. A. Donne Idling charged at the Hastings Alagistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., with selling liquor after hours. Mr L. A. Rogers appeared for the defendant, who pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant O’Neill stated that at 9.25 p.m. last Saturday night, in company with Sergeant Bonisch, he entered the defendant’s hotel through the main entrance, going into the private bar, where they found six men alongside the counter with the barman, Honnor, attending to them. Each ef these men admitted when questioned that they had no right to be on the premises. While questioning these men eight others came into the bar, but none of these were served with liquor. At the time the licensee was absent from the hotel. Air Rogers stated that Air Donne was absent from the hotel for about half an hour, during which peiod the offenea was committed. It was necessary during the absence of the licensee that bis servant should have access to the bar in order to supply liquor to boarders. There had not been any secrecy about the offence, which was committed openly with the doors all opened. Doane was convicted and fined £5 and costs. Arising out of the same offence a plea of guilty was entered by Reginald Hounor, barman, to supplying liquor. A conviction with a fine of £3 and coats was imposed. Also arising out of the same offence William AfcKay, Richard Ryan, John Sullivan, Patrick Ryan, Ronald Neale, Garry Ryan, William Crombie, Samuel Kearney, E. O'Neill, John McLean, Robert McCormack ami F. F. Lourie were each charged with being on licensed premises after hours. They were convicted and fined £1 and 10/costs. A plea of guilty- was entered by 1(. J. Haylock to a charge of being found on licensed premises after hours. SeniorSergeant O’Neill stilted that he found Haylock on licensed premises late on Saturday night last, when he was endeavouring to obtain liquor, but had not. been supplied. Defendant was ronvictled ami fined £1 and 1(1/- costs.
