According to a return issued to-day by the Unemployment Board the total number of unemployed registered tit Government labour bureaux on July 7 was 45,701. This compares very favourably with the total on June 9, which stood at 57,345, and on May 12, when the figure was 60,213. Men on registers but unplaceed or ineligible for unemployment relief for various reasons numbered 4178 on July Men on registers receiving relief, excluding gold prospectors, numbered 41,523, made up as ■ follow: Intermittent workers (waterside workers, coal miners and goods shed employees) who are receiving supplementary assistance under scheme No. 5, 216. Men whose relief wages are supplemented for fullI iine employment, 4156. Men who are receiving part-time relief under scheme No. 5, 33,523. Men receiving sustenance without work, 3628. Of the total of 41,523 receiving relief it is estimated that 13,300 were employed on developmental and reproductive work calculated to benefit the Dominion’s primary industries. Of workers engaged in industrial undertakings whoso earnings are subsidised from the Unemployment Fund, farm workers (schemes 4 A, 4 B, etc.) numbered 7794. Building tradesmen and builders’ labourers under scheme 10, 1596. Workers in Public Works Department, State Forest and local body camps under scheme 6 (principally single men) numbered 3398, and are made up as follow: Land development, 1613; highways and backblocks roads, 836; afforestation, 805; general, 144. The workers employed by the Public Works Department at standard rates of pay (principally married men) include men on land development work (951), and on road work (1672). Tn addition, gold miners and prospectors under scheme 5 numbered 3455 and under other schemes 169. There were 75 miscellaneous workers, giving a full total of 19,110 men engaged in industrial undertakings.
