GELIGNITE EXPLOSION Relief Works Depot Blown Up DAMAGE OVER WIDE AREA (Received 20, 10.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 20. A terrific explosion, which the police believe was deliberately set off, occurred early this morning, when a large quantity of gelignite detonators exploded in the unemployed relief works depot at Bexley, a suburb of Sydney. The depot was blown to pieces. Sheets of iron and tools were hurled hundreds of yards, windows in neighbouring houses were shattered, ceilings fell in shops and windows collapsed. Residents of the locality were terrified. Some people sleeping in their beds were shaken violently as if by an earthquake. Electric light wires were severed by flying iron, plunging the district into darkness. The effect of the explosion was felt fourteen miles away.
