Only a Beginning
(To the Editor.) Sir, —There is a good deal of misconception in the minds of people about the proposed harbour loan. It is thought that it will provide the mean* to make a harbour. ' This is not so. It will extend the present facilities and provide certain berthage for shipping and small boats, but in bad weather the position will be much the same as it is to-day. The wide, open mouth will create a tremendous range inside the basin, and small boats would be lucky in a. gale if they were lifted right over the mole and not on top ol it. We must understand that the first loan is the beginning of the million scheme for a definite harbour, and ii it were not for the force of the Pacific and future earthquakes, it might be advisable to go straight for it. An uncompleted harbour in such an exposed position is a- waste of money.— I am, etc., ‘■COMMONSENSE.” Hastings, 24/6/34.
