THE COW COCKIE
Heat, wind, dust, and drought, Things are jolly, there’s no doubt! Prices down to bedrock too— What’s the cockie gong to do? “Just smile and battle on,” you say, But smiles were never known to pay. The interest to the mortgagee, Nor pay for breakfast, dinner, tea, And folk would be inclined to stare If all the family went bare! “Just live on hope”—oh, what a diet! Such nourishment —oh, just you try it! For fourteen hours a day and more You’ll need to gather quite a store; Then when for instance you top-dress, Tone of hope alone won’t bless Nor make the pastures rich, ideal— Not even buy the pigs some meal, While “Daisy” is a faddy beast, She likes a little grass at least! “It’s grit you w;ant,” did someone say? He gets that every windy day! Gratis too —delivered free! For such concessions grateful be — And work —no cockie need complain! It’s round the clock and start again, With no “off week” for cockie friend. Nor that half-day, you may depend; But though the pay so oft is nil. With crit and hope, he’s smilin’ still; Undaunted, courage without end Still seeking that elusive “bend'
