RETIRING OFFICER
Assistant Harbourmaster CAPT. SHARPE HONOURED Captain A. D. Sharpe, who last week retired on superannuation from the position of assistant harbourmaster at Napier, which he held for 17 years, was met by the employees of the Napier Harbour Board and made the recipient of a case of pipes and a travelling rug as a mark of the esteem in which he is held. In making the presentation, the secretary, Mr. J. P. Kenny, referred to the happy relations that had always existed between Captain Sharpe and the other members of the stall. During his long service with the board he had always given of his best and he retired with a record of which he had every reason to feel proud. The harbourmaster. Captain H. White-Parsons, in adding his tribute to the splendid manner in which Captain Sharpe had always attended to his duties, wished him every happiness in his well-earned rest. Captain Sharpe spoke feelingly of his happy relations with the different members of the staff and of the co-opera-tion that had always existed. He greatly appreciated the presentation, and added that whatever he had done was nothing more than his duty. In appreciation of his services, Mr. G. Husheer, manager of the National Tobacco Factory, gave Captain Sharpe a large tin of" pipe tobacco and conveyed his best wishes for a happy retirement. Yesterday afternoon Captain Sharpe was made a further presentation, when he was met by representatives of the shipping and mercantile firms and presented with a wallet of notes and an arm-chair in appreciation of his cooperation during the long- period he was assistant harbourmaster. In expressing thanks for the tine gifts. Captain Sharpe said that in his retirement it was nice to know that his efforts had been appreciated. He went to sea in 1887 and just 34 years ago he took over his first command. He had been fortunate during his long period of service never to have had an accident, either at sea or in the service of the board. His duties had been made pleasant by the kindly cooperation of those who were associated ' with, him in the working of the port.
