WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ASHLEY CLINTON ANNUAL MEETING. The Ashley. Clinton Women’s Institute held its annual meeting on Thursday afternoon, Mrs Dampney presiding over a fair attendance of members. The president’s report for the year was very pleasing and the balance-sheet, which was read by the treasurer, Mrs Person, showed a very satisfactory llgure. It was decided to make a donation of £1 5/- to the hall committee for the use of the hall for meetings during the past year. Eulogistic references were accorded Mrs Dampney (president), Mrs Britton (secretary), Mrs Person (treasurer) and Mrs House (Press reporter) for the able way in which they had carried out their duties during the year. The potato competition was won by Mrs Morrison (30 lbs.), and Mrs F. Severinsen (25J lbs., being second. Tho following committee were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs Dampney; secretary, Mrs Britton; treasurer, Mrs Person; vice-presidents, Mesdames C. Severinsen and N. Waidin; committee, Mesdames Cook, Derry, Hanna, W. Thompson, Young and Miss Wilson. Mrs Hewersen was proposed as a new member. A photograph competition caused much amusement, Miss E. Jack being declared the winner. During the afternoon items, which were given by the following, were much appreciated:— Pianoforte solos, Miss Graham; songs, Mrs Dampney; recitations, Jean Severinsen; dumb charades, Mesdames C. Severinsen and W. Thompson; humorous reading, Mrs Derry; songs, Miss Petersen; swan dance and sailor’s hornpipe, Miss Dampney. A members’ parcel competition caused much amusement, the prize going to little Jimmy Britton. A jumbled letter competition was won by Mrs Hanna, Mrs Howse being second. A dainty afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames Hanna, Olsen and Collins, The singing of tho National Anthem brought to a close a very happy meeting.

ESKDALE CROUP MRS A. D. BROWN ENTERTAINS This month’s meeting of the Eskdale Women’s Institute was held at Mrs A. D. Brown’s residence, where members and three visitors were entertained as her guests. Business was dealt with as quickly as possible. Resolutions for the annual meeting were discussed. It was unanimously agreed to place on record the institute’s appreciation of Mr W. T. Kirkham’s help in various ways and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded him. This month’s motto is: “Character is what you are, reputation is what people think you are” and the roll call “Something I would like to know”. The awards in the sugar-bag cushion cover went to Miss I). Kirkham, Mrs llrown and Miss Kirkham. Those securing most nuts in the peanut hunt were Miss Swanston, Miss Wilson and Mrs Phillips (equal). An egg and spoon race was run in heats, the places in the final going to Miss G. Florence, Miss Swanston and Miss Kirkham. Mrs Conway was most successful in the putting competition. A delicious afternoon tea and later ice-crcams were served by the hostess, to whom, with Mr Brown, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded with musical honours. Before leaving a photograph of the party was taken by Mr Brown. The singing of the National Anthem brought a happy afternoon to a close.

MEETING AT FERNHILL MAKING OF VINE-NEEDLE BASKETS The Fernhill Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the Village Hal) on Thursday. Mrs Campbell presided over a large attendance of members. Mrs Campbell and Mrs Finch were appointed delegates to attend the halfyearly conference in Napier on April 24. A competition for the best batch of scones was won by Miss Peterson. Mrs Peterson being second and Mrs Griffiths third. Mrs Manson and Miss McMillan, of Twyford, gave a very interesting demonstration on pine-needle baskets, all members being very interested. A hearty rote of thanks was passed to the demonstrators by Mrs Griffiths. The potato competition was won by Mrs Webber. The tea hostesses were Mrs Sullivan and Mrs Erickson.
