It was said of the men’s operatic solo, for instance, that the judge, Mr 11. Barry Coney, doubted whether finer singing would be heard at any of the competitions festivals in New Zealand or Australia. The winners, Messrs K. Macaulay, <Wellington, and R. Trewern, of Wellington, were to be congratulated upon the quality of their interpretations.
Miss Florence Pacey, judge of elocution, had noticed in many competitors a deficiency in modulation. ‘‘Parents should really find out whether children have ability in elocution,” she observed, ‘‘as one hears so many children nowadays speaking in the one tone of voice, with faulty English and impure vowel sounds.” There was room for improvement of pieces rendered by competitors, she continued. In general terms she considered the rating of artistry at tho Napier competitions to be high, and equal almost to any other in the Dominion. Results of the judging at the sessions yesterday were as follow: — VOCAL Vocal solo, boys under nine, own selection.—Master B. Hasler (Hastings), .171 points, 1; Master P. Ram say (Napisr), 164 points, 2. Song in costume, boy or girl, under 10, o.vn selection.—Master N. Mahon (Gisborne), 174 points, 1; Master L. McCarthy (Napier) and Miss B. McMillan (Wellington), equal, 173 points, 2; Miss L. Larsen (Wellington), v.h.c. Song, accompanied by self, own selection, boy or girl.—Miss M. Hart (Napier), 168 points, 1; Master D. Davies (Hastings), 149 points, 2. Musical monologue, humorous, open. — Miss Gracie Kerr (Wellington), 97 points, 1; E. Muir (Lower Hutt), 95 points, 2; Miss Betty Alexander (Napier), v.h.c.
