FIRE AT WAIPUKURAU
Large House Destroyed
OWNER A HEAVY LOSER
A two-storeyed, ten-rooined house situated in Fann road, about three miles from Waipukurau. was totally destroyed by fire on Sunday evening. The owner. Mr. J. McLennan, and his familv were absent at the time. A number of nearby settlers attempted to save some of the effects, but were unable to do so, though the contents of an adjoining shed were saved. The Waipukurau Fire Brigade and ire men present at the United District Fire Brigades' Association conference were in attendance, but were unable to
assist owing to lack of water supply. It is understood that the owner. Mr. McLennan, is a heavy loser, and in addit on to all his furniture and effects there were a number of valuable curios and •■■intings destroved which bo hnd brought out from Scotland. These, apart from their commercial value, ncre prized for sentimental reasons. The whole building m a total loss, and nhat was once an old and well-known residence in the Waipukurau district is now nothing but a heap of ashes and debris. i The insurance’ if any. are not available.
