MINE SHAFT IN CITY
“Down 2000 Feet” ILLUSION IN MELBOURNE All the sensations of a descent to 2000 feet in a mine shaft, with the “cage” passing through draughts of hot ami cold air to where miners work in a dark cave, lit by safety lamps, will be provided for Centenary visitors to Melbourne. Actually, the cage will only be lowered six feet into a cave on a vacant block. An elaborate scheme to give all the illusions of a descent into a deep mine is being prepared. The organisation of this mining exhibition is in the hands of Mr. A. E. Kane, of the Centenary Council, who is working in co-operation with the Chamber of Mines, the State Alines Department, the Stock Exchange, and the heads of the principal mining companies. The shaft will have glass sides, and behind the glass material made to resemble earth and rock will revolve rapidly to give Um effect of a descent to a depth of 2000 ft. In the cave miners would give practical demonstrations of their craft. Mr. Kane say- that in the hall and laboratory demonstrations will lie given Of the treatment of complex ores and concentrates, which are now sent to Germany, and which .he claimed, could be processed just as efficiently in Aus tralia.
