NEGRO STUDENTS RIOT

Colour Bar in Restaurant TESTING LEGALITY OF RULE WASHINGTON, March 17. A score or more negro students from ■ Howard University, a local Govern-ment-supported institution, rioted in the capital and clashed with the police today, when prevented from entering the House of Representatives restaurant “to test the legality” of the unwritten rule barring negroes from service. The incident grew out of a conflict which has arisen between Representative de Priest, the only negro in the House, and Southern representatives who ordered the restaurant manager to refuse service to negroes after the latter had for some time been admitted.
