PUKETAPU SPORTS

SUCCESSFUL AND ENJOYABLE TIME. A glorious sunny day with a light breeze made ideal weather for the numerous patrons of the always popular Puketapu s[xirts, which each year as a social affair increases in importance also entries and attendance, women being in the majority. The sports grounds are beautifully situated, the Hats having the pretty green background of low li'.>*s. Cars were parked close to the rails and all events were easily seen. There was such a lot to interest—the cycle and athletic events, Highland dancing and piping, fascinating horse •vents, jumping, tilting in the ring, musical chans, and last but not least, the woodchoppers, and the women marvelled at the rate the choppers cut through the block and regretfully wished they could have the pieces to take away. The dog trials attracted farmers and others interested, so altogether it was a royal feast of sport. On the running track and led by the Napier Highland Pipe Band a pretty sight was witnessed when a parade took place of all athletes, cyclists, woodchoppers and Highland dancers, who received an ovation from those present. Tea was obtainable on the grounds and hot water for picnic parties. Between watching events some social visiting to friends in car s wa g noted •nd many little picnic tea parties had a happy time. All classes of sport had their following. The Highland dancing had large entries and it was noticed that Jean Lowry (Napier) wore a new costume of the glorious and colourful Buchanan tartan, the plaid showing a blending of black, white, red, yellow, bine and green. One of the most exciting events both for competitors and spectators was the chasing of a young live pig. Dozens of boys and girls were in the hunt and •mid squeals he was caught, but apparently his coat was greasy and to the delight of all he gave another good run and finally was caught firmly, still loudly voicing a protest. Among the large gathering present were: Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P., Patron of the club, and Miss Campbell ■ Mr Phil Dolbel (Redclyffe), president of the club, and Mrs Dolbel; Mr F. S. Byrne (secretary), and Mrs Byrne; Mr Marshall (treasurer), Mr Phil Drummond and Mrs Drummond. From Puketapu there were present Mr and Mrs J. Alexander, Mr and Mrs Gillespie, Mr and Mrs J. Kennedy, Mr •nd Mrs Malcolm Brodie, Mr T. Daley •nd Miss Daley, Mr Evan Davi s and Miss Davis, Mrs and Miss Inglis. Mesdames C. Tong, Eric Orr. McKinley, Potter and Fearu, Messrs J. Bicknell, Hayes, R. Inglis, J. Daley, D. Alexander, and the Rev. C. E. Hyde.
