PAHIATUA’S CONDITION
Representations to Ministers ASSISTANCE REQUESTED By Telegraph—Press Association PAHIATUA, March 10. Two Public Works engineers arrived here on Saturday and as a result of their inspection condemned a number of buildings. They are reported to have made sweeping recommendations. Several areas have been roped off. There was a large number of sightseers and visitors from other towns on Sunday. There were further shakes on Saturday night, Tho work of demolition continues. There was heavy rain overnight A local business house, a considerable sufferer in the earthquake, received a request from an Auckland firm for the prompt payment of an account of a few shilling for goods supplied just over a fortnight ago. By the same mail at least a dozen letters were received by other merchants expressing sympathy for the severe losses and offering to render assistance if called for, A deputation representative of business people, property owners, the Farmers’ Union and soldier settlers, headed by the Mayor, Mr Wilson, made strong representations to the Hon. E, A. Ransom, and the Hon. R. Masters this after noon for Government assistance for the earthquake sufferers. The deputation asked that the Public Works Department take over the rehabilitation of chimneys throughout the district and to ensure the completion of the work be fore winter. Financial assistance was also requested for the principal losers on similar lines to the assistance given tn Hawke’s Bay in 1931. Both Ministers expressed sympathy with the district in its trouble, recognising that Pahiatua was probably hit harder than any other centre. They promised to make strong representations to Cabinet. The Ministers previously made an in spection of the business area.
