LUXURY LINERS
“Mad Race” for Supremacy
In an article in the "Shipping World” Lord Inverforth, president of the institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, and formerly Minister of Munitions, champions "pocket” liners of moderato comfort operating in conjunction with aircraft.
"All the maritime nations,” he says, "have indulged in a mad race to outvie each other in producing the largest, the fastest and the most luxurious vessel afloat.
"Present-day conditions of travel certainly demand speed coupled with comfort, but there has been no justification for the building of some of the gigantic lineru now in commission and at present under construction. By reason, of their high original cost, it is extremely doubtful if they can be operated on profitable lines.” Lord Inverforth thinks that the operation of aircraft in connection with liners, taking off from the ship some hundreds of miles from land, has vast possibilities. "The employment ot fast vessels in conjunction with aircraft and tho facilities derived from the use of wireless in all its various phases will do far more.” he says, "towards meeting pre-sent-day demands for speed in transit than the building of freak craft, which belonged to an extravagant age when economic efficiency was merely a secondary consideration.”
