HAPPY GATHERING
W.C.T.U. MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hastings W.C.T.U. in Wesley Hall on Thursday was a happy gathering. Two members were presented with flowers—red roses to Mrs T. J. Thompson in honour of her golden wedding, and carnations to Mrs Hickmott, who celebrated her silver wedding last month. Mrs Cook led the devotions, and stressed the necessity for prayer if the work was to succeed.
Reports of the recent garden party were received, and £6 of the proceeds was voted to the headquarters’ fund, in honour of the jubilee year. Genera] discussion took place to the value of garden parties as money-raising efforts, and it was decided that for the following year the Union should encourage direct giving. Mrs Hickmott and Mi's Hudson were unanimously ap. pointed delegates to the Jubilee Convention in Wellington next ~ionth.
The treasurer gave a resume of the completed 1933 balance-sheet. Over £29 had been collected during the year, and £2B paid out. The P.O. Savings Bank book shows £36 held in trust. Miss Mitchell was warmly applauded for her fine work as treasurer
It being “Frances Willard Day,” an article was read, telling how Illinois, being allowed to place only two statue 8 of her most eminent citizens in the Hall of Fame at the Capitol, “presented to the nation a statue of this woman, cunningly carved, by a woman, out of the finest and the whitest of marbles.” The afternoon’s collection in honour of the day, was forwarded to the World Missionary Fund
