CHILDREN’S HOME APPEAL

COMMITTEE AND HELPERS

GYMKHANA ARRANGED FOR.

An important meeting in connection with the annual appeal for funds to help the Hawke’s Bay Children’s Homes was held in the Hastings Women 's Community Club rooms yesterday, about 25 people attending. Many people had come from a distance to represent their district, these includ ing Mrs. Coleman and Mrs. Greenwood (Havelock North), Mrs. IL AL Campbell (Poukawa), Mrs. J. N. Lowry tOreka) and many more. Mr. G. Rochfort, chairman of the Homes, was in the chair. Mr. Rochfort in a brief opeech thanked all who had helped, especially the various Women’s Institutes m Hawke's Bay and the farmers. The latter had helped splendidly. Special thunks were expressed to Airs. Colemau for her organisation, and also to the Hastings committee which has taken a keen interest not only in the financial but tho personal side of this welfare work.

Air. Rochfort said there was an overdraft at the bank of £3090, but the Homes were enabled to keep going as so much excellent help was given. There was only one appeal in each year and now was tho time to consider this financial aspect again. Mrs. Coleman, who has done so much w-ork for the Homes, suggested that a gymkhana be held, with many side shows, and other attractions, the fete to be arranged on a largo scale to attract the whole countryside. Mrs Lovell Smith, speaking in agreement, mentioned the successful fete organised by the National Youth Aloveuicnt.

Air. Rochfort said that there must bo definite attractions to entertain the public. Considerable discussion then resulted in the meeting deciding to hold a gymkhana on Thursday, March 22. Produce from tho Autumn Show would bo donated by many people who are eager to help. Two energetic organising secretaries will take full charge of tho main arrangements. The names of these gentlemen will be given shortly. Some of those who will help ai stalls are: —Cakes, Alesdames Glenny and Tripe, Miss H. Ford; sweets, Girl Guiders; produce, Mesdames G. Rochfort and A. It. Greenwood, G. Saunders and Williams; games, Alesdames Stratton and Darvell; skittles, Air. and Mrs. H. Stratton; jumping and sporting events, Mrs. J. Lowry; flower stall, Alesdames Cohen and E. J. Herrick; baby show, Mesdames W. Alackenzie, Lyons and S. Jones. Tho Women's Community Club will De asked to take charge of the tea.

A Caledonian Alarket to include stalls odds and ends, antiques, and jumbles will be in the charge of Alesdames Giorgi, Abbott and helpers.
