ACCUSED MAN MISSING
Fruitless Police Search
The alleged absconding of a man charged with theft, and a subsequent search by police sent out to arrest him, caused a long delay : n the criminal proceedings of the Hastings Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The accused was Frank James Haycock, who was charged with stealing a postal note, valued at £l, the property of Margaret Smith, of Pakipaki, in September last. The accused was to have appeared on summons, but failed to answer when his name was called in the morning. A warrant for his arrest was issued forthwith, and the* Court was adjourned till 2.15 p.in. to give the nolice an opportunity of making an a: cst. At 2.45 o’clock Detective Farquharson stated that the accused had been seen leaving a Hastings boarding-house at 6 a.m., and had a swag on his back. The police had made a diligent search for the man, but had been unable to find him. The detective added that among the witnesses was a man who had been brought especially from Well-
