CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDE LINDSAY WINS 440 YARDS JARVIS TAKES 50 YARDS RACE By Telefiraph— Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 21. The New Zealand national swimming championships were concluded this evening in heavy rain, the weather being very cold. Results :— Women’s 440 yards championship— Miss M. Leydon (Auckland) 1, Miss N. Ludlow (Auckland) 2, Miss N. Basstian (Southland) 3. Also started: Misses J. Morse and V. Berry (Canterbury). Won by 11 yards, Miss Basstian a similar distance back. Time, 6 2 1-5. Men’s 440 yards.—First heat: D. E. Lindsay (Manawatu) 1, E. McConville (Canterbury) 2, R. Frankham (Auckland) 3. Also started: S. Boardman (Hawke’s Bay). Won by a yard. Time, 5.45 1-5. Second heat: N. Crump (Auck)and) 1, R. Thomas (Auckland) 2, R. Watkins (Hawke’s Bay) 3. Also started: D. H. Symes (Canterbury) and J. C. Blakeley (Wellington). Won by two yards. Water polo championship.—Canterbury A beat Wellington, 4-0; Canterbury B drew with Otago, 3-3. Canterbury A won the championship. Men’s 50 yards invitation scratch race.—W. Jarvis (Otago) 1, W. Whareaitu (South Auckland) 2, D. H Symes (Canterbury) 3. Women’s 50 yards invitation race. -Miss M. Farquar (Auckland) 1, Miss S. Grange (Auckland) 2, Miss N. Basstian (Southland) 3. Time, 30 secs.

The Yaldhurst Shield for most points scored by a province at the meeting was won by Auckland with 65 points, Canterbury being next with 21 points, and Manawatu third.
