TOURING ATHLETES

AUSTRALIAN VISITORS APPEARANCE AT WAIMATE METCALFE’S RECORD JUMP By Telegraph—Press Association WAIMATE, Feb. 21. The visiting Australian athletes, J, P, Metcalfe, E. W. Barwick and T. S. Hampson, made their first appearance in New Zealand at the sports here today. The New Zealand champions also competed. The weather was fine, and sunny, there being a good attendance of the public, but a strong gusty southerly and a heavy track did not'provide the best conditions. Barwick was defeated in the mile by A. Dobbs (Waimate) off 90 yards. Bar. wick’s time o" 4.32 was not comparable with his record of 4.16 4-5 and his recent Australian performance of 4.2(1. Barwick ,who is holder of the Australian mile record am] credited with being Australia’s greatest miler, did not appear again. Metcalfe, characterised as the greatest jumper ever produced in Australia, broke the New Zealand jump record of 6 feet 2J inches by f inch, but failed nt 6 feet 4 inches owing to the spongy turf and a strong wind. Metcalfe knew that he should be capable of the latter and made four attempts each time just touching the liar with his body. His record is 6 feet 6 1-8 inches. In tho broad jump Metcalfe reached 23 ft (>] ins. with the wind behind him, this not equalling his recent record of 24 ft 6 ins. He also surpassed the New Zealand hop, stop and jump record of 48 ft 2-J ins. by achieving 50 ft 2J ins. Application is being made for a record for Metcalfe, excepting for the broad jump on account of the wind behind him. Hampson, who is considered to be the most consistent amateur sprinter iu Australia, showed his outstanding ability by the way he gathered in the field to win by nearly a foot in the 100 yards from J. D. Carmichael and J. Macfarlane, the New Zealand champion. His time of 10 1-5 seconds was most creditable under the conditions, and he beat Macfarlane by four yards in the 220 invitation race in 22 2-5 secs, only 1-5 sec. less than at the New South Wales championships.
