Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the wreck of the Union Company’s steamer Penguin, with the loss of 7 lives, after striking an unknown obp in Cook Strait. The wreck, which occurred shortly after 10 o’clock on the night of February 12, 1909, when the vessel was bound from Pieton to Wellington, is considered to be one of the greatest shipping disasters that has occurred in New Zealand waters. A few of the passengers and crew were washed ashore elinging to wreckage. The sole woman survivor, Mrs A. L. Hannam, is now living at Lower Queen street, Onehunga.
