THE CANCELLED TOUR

Australians Not to Come TEAM NOT STRONG ENOUGH '.R Telegraph Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 10. The visit of the Australian cricket team to New Zealand has been cancelled. This decision was announced today by Mr. A. T. Donnelly, chairman of the management committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council. Explaining the reasons for the cancellation of the tour, Mr Donnelly said that the prospects of a successful tour had been seriously affected by the absence of well-known players and by complaints and discussions in the Australian press regarding allowances. The council had originally budgeted for a loss of £5OO on the tour, but this certainly would be increased now, and the council did not feel justified in incur ring that loss. A cable has been despatched to the Australian Board of Control selling out the council's reasons AUSTRALIA NOT SURPRISED (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, leb. 11. The New Zealand cricket decision has not surprised cricket circles here where the view is expressed that after picking the English team another com bination for New Zealand must include some whose local status is third class and unlikely to prove a drawing power in the Domiuiou tour. Mr lleydon, secretary of the New South Wales Cricket Council, expressed surprise at the decision, but would not comment beyond saying that he thought the team finalised yesterday would have given a good account of themselves. Mr Oxlade, chairman of the Board of Control, said that he Lad heard nothing official from New Zealand, and was not ready to comment on the latest development. A message from Adelaide says that the New Zealand concellation caused a sensation in cricket circles there. The assumption is that the Dominion is dissatisfied with the Australian side selected. |
