The “Daily Express’s” Vienna correspondent vouches for an extraordinary story concerning Michael Detenyl, of Budapest, who got himself hanged in order to get even with an insurance company i which insured his life for £5OOO for death from “natural causes,” and £lO,OOO for “death from other than natural causes.” Wanting £2500 urgently, Detenyi offered to renounce all further claims, otherwise he would commit suicide. The company, thinking he was bluffing, refused to pay. A few days later Detenyi killed his best friend. He was tried for murder and hanged.
His heirs, claiming that hanging was not a natural death, successfully sued the insurance company for £lO,OOO. The climax came when it was found that the murdered man was similarly insured for £20,000 if “death was due to other than natural causes.”
The judge agreed that the murder was not natural, so the heirs of the murdered man receive £20,000, completing Detenyi’s promise to inflict “an unpleasant and expensive surprise upon the company.”
