GENERAL EXODUS
Wellington Empties Itself. VOLUMINOUS TRAIN TRAFFIC (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 23. After doing greater business —some say 25 per cent, greater—than on the davs preceding Christmas of last year, the shops closed at 12.30 for the long week-end and the congested streets emptied with astonishing speed, and the exodus of people to suburban beaches and places farther afield increased. Train traffic inwards and outward is exceedingly heavy. It is estimated that 1000 people left for the north by the two trains to-day and more than 1000 for Rotorua and Tauranga. Five trains from Wellington and New Plymouth brought about 2000 visitors. The weather prospects for the holidays appear fairly good. To-day is dull and hot.
