SMEDLEY CADET AWARD
Douglas Gold Medal to C. Forsyth The examination of senior cadets of Smedley Estate in connection with the Douglas gold medal was completed by the Department of Agriculture yesterday afternoon, when it was announced that the winner was Cecil Forsyth, of Wairoa, with S. Mortensen second, only four points behind. Commenting upon the W'ork of the candidates, Mr E. E. Elphick, one of the examiners, said (hat the boys had attained a very high standard, and that there was no doubt that they were getting wonderful training, both practical and theoretical, from the manager (Mr E. Douglas). “Any farmer who gets one of these boys will secure a great worker,” he said, “and not the slightest difficulty is expected in placing these boys on suitable farms.” Mr Elphick mentioned that the examination was set by the Department of Agriculture and that the candidates were senior cadets on the Smedley Estate. They were examined in field and stock work. This year there were five candidates, but next year, it is expected, there w:<* be seven.
