DELINQUENT HUSBAND

“Swindled Out of Justice” GAOL OR MAINTENANCE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 22. David James Richards appeared before Mr Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, seeking a rehearing of the case in which he was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment .unless he pays past and current maintenance in respect of his wife and child. The application for a rehearing was on the grounds of inability to pay maintenance . Mr Watson, counsel for the wife, objested that a rehearing could be granted only if fresh evidence had been discovered. Mr Stilwell said there were no grounds in Richards’s present application on which the Court could grant a rehearing. “I’m swindled out of justice. That’s the position. It’s a shameful thing,’’ cried Richards. Mr Watson asked for costs, saying that Richards deliberately abused the processes of both the Magistrate’s Court and the Supreme Court whenever he could. tl cost him nothing for frequent harassing litigation against his wife. At this stage Richards’s description of his wife was such that the Magistrate threatened to have him put in custody if he could not restrain his tongue. Two guineas costs were allowed Mr Watson, and the Magistrate left the bench to the accompaniment of “Justice? Justice? It’s a shame! ’’from Richards.
