AUCKLAND CUP MEETING

PERUSAL OF THE FIELDS. (By “The Barb.”) As is always the case, the best of the Dominion horses will be seen in action at Auckland next week. This year’s Auckland Cup see/j the top weights at Bst only, a favour that has not been seen for many years. Gold Trail is the Bay’s hope, and fit and well on the day she should not disgrace us. The following is a review of the fields:— QUEEN’S PLATE, 1 mile: Kiltowyn is the goods, but to date has won only two races, and that as far back as last Easter. Sunny Bachelor may not be up to this class. Gay Marigold is a good mare. Catalogue won well on both days at Woodville. Epigram was out of the money last week in the Waipa Hack Cup. Limbohm is a fair three-year-old. Rereatu is in winning form, but since his win in the Takapuna Plate has failed to reproduce that form. Sea Fox is starting, and on his second to Gay Sheila in the Auckland Guineas deserves consideration. Spiral won well at Woodville. Gipsy Love, on form, looks out of her depth. The favourites may be Catalogue, Spiral and Gay Marigold. GREAT NORTHERN FOAL STAKES 6 furlongs.: Sporting Blood so far has not raced up to promise, although he has won. Pin Money won the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes. Keith Lu and Pound Sterling have shown handicap form only. King Brierly is an improving colt. Whenuakura has proved himself of classic class. Gay Blonde is but fair. Burnish won well at Woodville, but the opposition was moderate. Mother Superior won the Auckland Welcome Stakes, beating Whenuakua, so that the meeting of this filly and the colt will be one of the tit-bits of the meeting. Brown Betty showed fair form at Riccarton in the spring. Sirona has won a minor two-year-old race. Most money may bo invested on Whenuakura, Mother Superior and Pin Money. ROBINSON HACK HANDICAP, 7 furlongs (First Division): Should Jonathan not start the favourites may be Allegretto, Royal Dash and Alpinus. In the Second Division the favourites may be Star Artist, Lucidus and Copyist. AUCKLAND CUP, 2 miles: King’s Knave has done well in his preparation, and as the Comedy King gelding has also the form, no doubt he will retain his favourite position to the last moment. Master Brierly since coming back from his unsuccessful trip to Australia, has not raced. He is a solid little fellow and a born stayer. Master Norval has come into prominence this last few months. Nightly showed at the New Zealand Cup Meeting that he is right up to standard. His stable had in Ballymena a great throe-year-old a few seasons back that failed to gain a place in this race, so therefore a three-year-old has proved a poor sort to follow. Speedmint ha,s run well this season in all her races, and was also fifth in this race last year. Rocket was second jn the New Zealand Cup in what was termed the poorest field that contested the event for years, yet a time record was made. Minerval’s best was a second in the New Zealand Cup fourteen months ago. Bed Sun is being eagerly discussed as a possibility, but his form is only moderate. Carfex is a possible lightweight. Alloy, over this distance, is not recommended. Gold Trail must be considered. Jonathan last autumn ran Silver Scorn to a head in the Great Northern St. Leger. King March is always going to pull off some big handicap, but has yet to accomplish it. Maybe when the final investments are made Nightly, Speedmint, Rocket, and Master Rrierly will be found carrying most money.

GRAFTON HURDLES, 2 miles: This is not exactly u strong field. With form to act as a guide the favourites may be Thespis, Wee Pat and Acervate.

RAILWAY HANDICAP, 6 furlongs: Croupier has been lame, but it is said not to be serious. Puss Moth is good on any going but on a wet track would have his chances enhanced. Greek Gold is a good sprinter, and his stable bracket, Exaggeration, at 7.7 has been one of the prime selections ever since the appearance of the weights. Barm bury failed last week at Waipa. Tradesman must be considered. L’Allegro may find six furlongs hardly far enough. Gay Sheila is unbeaten so far this season. Silver Streak, winner of the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap, calls for respect. British Columbia may not be class enough. Diatomous is a brilliant sprinter and beginner and won at his last outing. Pomp narrowly beat Souchong at Feilding over five furlongs. Bellkyrian has a maiden to her credit, whilst Boughal has won but a couple of minor races. Guarantee was a fair three-year-old last season. Sinking Fund has improved. Star Artist is a possibility. There is no mistake it is a. tough field, but when all is summed up most money may be invested on Gay Sheila, Tradesman, Guarantee and The Greek Gold—Exag. geration bracket.

NURSERY HANDICAP, 5 furlongs: Quite a few of these youngsters have shown fair form this season. Maybe the favourites will be Variant, Rarepai and Sirona. CHRISTMAS HANDICAP, 1 mile: At the handicap Cricket Bat, at 8.12 is hard to pass over. Baroscope may be at Manawatu. Sunny Sky was responsible for the best gallop on Thursday morning. Shatter is not solid. Chief Cook is galloping very well. Knight of Australia has not won for some time. King’s Archer won at Waipa. Eager Rose has been backed once or twice of late but was beaten. Mungatoon, on recent form, will not lack for support. Of the remainder the local Lady Spy may go best, the favourites on the machine may be Sunny Sky, Cricket Bat and King’s Archer. FAIRWAYSCRATCHED By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dee. 21. Fairway was scratched for the Auckland Cup at 4 p.m.
