Lieutenant W. S. Wilson, of the First Field Battery, New Zealand Artillery, has been promoted to the rank of captain.
Mr E. Laming Evans, a noted English orthopaedic surgeon, arrived at Auckland by the Rangitata on Wednesday to spend a holiday in New Zealand.
Mr S. J. Macßev and Mr W. GSharp, representing a large English meat importing firm, arrived at Auckland by the Rangitata on Wednesday.
Mr W. Benzies, secretary of the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board, returned by the Rangitata after a business visit to South America and England.
The Rt. Hon. Sir Phillip CunlifleLister has been presented with his portrait, painted by Captain Oswald Birley, on behalf of Mauritius, as a token of gratitude and esteem.
Mr Gordon J. Reid is to retire at the end of the year from the position of joint manager of the Commercial Union. Ocean Union and A.P.A. Union Insurance Companies and the London Assurance Corporation.—Press Assn.
Dr. Rudolf Asmiss. German Consul for Australia and New Zealand, will arrive at Auckland by the Wanganella on January 5. He will be accompanied by his wife and family, and will mate a motor tour through New Zealand.
Mr J. E. Lovelock, the New Zealand athlete, was recently operated on in England for cartilage trouble in the knee. Although he is recovering, he i* not progressing as well as was hoped. There is no question of a further operation.
Miss Alcira Olive, the well-known Argentine woman dramatist, who has already made a mark as a playwright, lias been appointed secretary to the Board of Education of Santa Fe. This is the first time in the history of the Argentine that a woman has received • position of this kind.
Sir Thomas Wilford was the chief guest at the Lucifer Golfing Society’* dinner, at which Mr S. M. Bruce alluded to the golden opinions Sir Thomas had won while High Commissioner, both personally and for New Zealand.— Press Association cable.
Major R. S. Park, Regiment of Royal N.Z.A., has been appointed staff officer, Artillery, G.H.Q., officer commanding R.N.Z.A., Central Command, staff officer for Coast Defences and Medium Artillery, and chief artillery instructor, Central Command, Wellington.
Viscount Long of Wraxall, aide to Lord Bledisloe, arrived at Sydney yesterday aboard the Orama accompanied by Viscountess Long. They Bailed later for New Zealand aboard the Maunganui. Prior to departure they were the guests of Sir Philip Game. Governor of New South Wales. Viscount Long is tall and youthful looking. He ig 22 years of age. His recent wedding was one of the brilliant social events of London. He is looking forward with the keenest interest to his new appointment.
