MISHAP TO SUBMARINE

Commander Reinstated LONDON, December 19. The Admiralty Board, reviewing the sentence of Lieutenant>Commander Lewes, acquitted him of responsibility for the explosion and reprimanded him for navigational faults. The board reinstated him in command of the L 26.

Lieutenant-Commander John Hugh Lewis, who commanded the L 26, was court-martiallcd and charged with the stranding of the submarine and neglecting after grounding to ensure sufficient examination of the batteries before charging. Expert evidence was given that there was nothing to explain the explosion. The Court found the charges proved and dismissed Lewis from the ship and severely reprimanded him.
