AWAPUNI TRACK WORK Course Improved by Rain TE RANGITUMAU IMPROVES (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Dec. 21. Steady rain set in last night, and although it eased off at. 4.30 a.m. it, still continues. The tyaeks have benefited materially, and mentors took full advantage of the improved conditions this morning to gallop their charges. On the course proper Arctic Region did seven furlongs in 1.37 2-5, after takikng 1.11 for the first five. Top Flier covered six furlongs in 1.21 1-5, after running the first three in 40 4-5 see. Tudor and Gay Coat were partners over six furlongs. They ran the first three furlongs in 39 2-ssec, and were slowed up to complete their task in 1.21 4-5. Dombey and Ralphyllis finished together at the close of a five-furlong spin in 1.74. Interlocutor, alone, broke 1.7 for the same distance. Ebeum, Pango and Senegal finished in that order at the end of a mile in 1.50 1-5. They ran the first two furlongs in- 27 3-ssec, and five in 1.8. Ebeum finished attractively. Sir Romeo was a length clear of Treasure Hunt, with Callamart eased up, at the end of three furlongs. They ran the first two in 27 3-ssec, and seven in 1.37 2-5. Sir Spear held Park Acre in the final stages of a seven-furlongs task, the last six taking 1.25 2-5. After breakfast, La Crown ran an easy six furlongs in 1.24, after traversing the first three in 42sec. Equitant, after running the initial furlong in 13 4-ssec and three in 39 2-ssec, completed six furlongs in 1.21 1-5.
Thrasher, Te Rangitumau and King Thomond finUted in that order at the end of six furlongs. The first three were accomplished in 40 l-ssec. Te Rangitumau displays improvement. Flaxen was held back to Inveresk in the early stages of a half-mile run. The latter finished nicely, running the distance in 54sec. Hunting Lodge, who followed, took l-ssee longer for the same task. Boudoir finished too strongly for Ythan after leaving three furlongs behind in 38 4 ssee. The latter, however, is an indifferent track worker. Blacksmith, pulling hard, came home from the half-mile post in 54 2-ssec, after running the first two furlongs in 27 4-ssec. GALLOPS AT ELLERSLIE Useful Efforts Recorded (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 21. A strong northerly wind, accompanied by a light drizzle made matters unpleasant for training operations at Ellerslie before breakfast, but after the interval the weather cleared. Heavy rain fell overnight, consequently the ground cut out slightly, but despite this the going was fast. The course proper, with the poles 40 feet out from the rails, was available, and the bulk of the fast work was done on this track. No 3 grass and the sand, tan, and two-year-old tracks were also in use. Some useful efforts were recorded, the best being those of Sunny Sky, Kiltowyn, Guarantee, and Pin Money. ON THE COURSE PROPER. Red Sun, after trotting a round on the sand, was sent seven furlongs on the course proper in 1.34 1-5, the final three taking 40 l-ssec. He could have improved on this. Lord Vai and Karangapai ran five furlongs in 1.5. They were on terms at the finish, with Lord Vai going the better of the pair. Sunny Sky was responsible for the best seven furlongs of the morning. She ran the first half-mile in 51 2-ssec and completed the task in 1.31 2-5. She was running on soundly at the finish. Her stablemates, Gay Broney and My Money, were associated over a mile, the first half in 51 3-ssec, and five furlongs in 1.3 3-5. After reaching the straight Gay Broney drew out and completed the gallop in 1.46 4-5, My Money taking 1.48. Gay Broney did his work well.
The Cup candidates, Gold Trail and Master Brierly, were together after a mile in 1.46, the first half in 51 3-ssec and the final four in 54 2-ssec. Both did their work comfortably. The two-year-olds Sporting Blood, the Lucullus —Country Air filly, and Royal Appellant, were in that order after half a mile in 50 4-ssec. Sporting Blood did his work attractively. Cropier, with his trainer in the saddle, strode half a mile in 54sec very easily. Catalogue did six furlongs in 1.22 3-5, bding under restraint throughout.
Epigram, Chief Cook and Limbohm were in that order after five furlongs in 1.5, the first two taking 25 2-ssee. All worked well. Spiral and Pomp did six furlongs in 1.20 1-5. Kiltowyn, from a standing start at the seven furlong post, ran three furlongs in 39sec and finished in 1.33 —a sound effort. Sunny Bachelor was several lengths ahead of Miss Rewa after seven furlongs in 1.34 1-5. AFTER BREAKFAST. Jewelled Girdle worked alone over seven furlongs and was not fully extended in 1.36. Guarantee sprinted three furlongs in 38 l-ssee in first-rate style. Baroscope, beginning slowly, did a mile and a quarter in 2.26 1-5, the last five occupying 1.6 2-5. He worked better than usual. Red Manfred, after beginning slowly over a round, sprinted his last half-mile in 51 l-ssee. Pin Money, jumping out smartly, ran three furlongs in 37 2-ssee—a good effort. Copyist, after the first three in 42sec, finished six furlongs in 1.23 3-5, and was never at top. Bodyline, Burnish, Day Wind, and Brown Betty did serviceable work. Arrivals this morning included Silver Streak, Mother Superior, Whenuakura, Carfex, Eara, Minerval, Shatter, and Nightly.
