Joyce Cummins, on behalf of Form 11., also presented the departing teacher with a piece of china, and wished him success in his new position.

Mr. D. A. J. Rutherford, superintendent of schools in Samoa, who is to spend four months’ furlough in New Zealand, arrived at Lyttelton by the Maui Pomare on Monday. He has gone to Dunedin, where his home was before he went to Samoa 15 years ago. It will be remembered that Mr. Rutherford escorted two Samoan chiefs through New Zealand in 1930.

The Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, who is absent from home on a visit to the East Coast district, is expected to return this evening. A few days ago His Lordship had a narrow escape from serious injury when his car ran over a bank and somersaulted twice before coming to rest in a raupo swamp north of Gisborne. With him at the time was his son, and both escaped with only minor abrasions to the body and legs. The Bishop was able to proceed and keep his engagements.

Mr. F. M. Bathurst, of Gloucester shire, a cousin of the Governor-General. Lord Bledisloe, arrived at Auckland yesterday bv the Rangitata. He is accompanied by Mrs. Bathurst and they left for Wellington by train last night to stay with their Excellencies at Government House. Mrs. and Mrs. Bathurst live near Lord Bledisloe ’a estate in Gloucestershire. Thev visited New Zealand in 1925 before His Excellency was appointed Governor-General of the Dominion. On this occasion they hope to spend about three months in New Zealand.—Press Assn.
